The Window of Tolerance is a concept coined by renowned Psychiatrist, Dr. Dan Siegel, who is most known for the Multidisciplinary Framework Interpersonal Neurobiology (structure and function of the mind are shaped by experiences). The Window of Tolerance references a zone, each individual has within themselves, where one can feel grounded in their ability to regulate their emotions, feel present in the "here and now", and manage stress that may arise in any given moment. This state is the zone between Hyperarousal and Hypoarousal. Hyperarousal tends to refer to the state of "fight or flight", whereas hypoarousal more commonly describes the "freeze" response. Trauma, chronic stress, and exhaustion can alter or shrink our Window of Tolerance, resulting in more time spent in either a hyper or hypo state. Many strategies can improve our Window of Tolerance. These include: Grounding & Mindfulness, Compassion & Connection, & Physical State Shifting. Window of Tolerance
